Un Chien Andalou Review, WTF

A strictly disturbing film with exciting images and unanticipated next scenes. This film comes straight out of the truthful mind of Disturbia. I can only hope that my subconscious can create the absurdity found here. The film left me wondering what it was about until the very end when it all became so clear. And it’s such a simple old tale known through the generations: the tale of the dutiful housewife and the unjust man. Or in this case, the unjust “dog.”

With no words to convey extensive thought and experience, the audience must rely on pure visuals and eerily melodic tunes for “understanding”. The actors here did a phenomenal job at exuding great expression through countenance and charismatically odd bodily movements. The man’s faltering hand down the woman’s back upon his dying, her repeatedly sticking her tongue out at the “dog,” effectively having the last laugh, and the woman’s little skip-hop over the rocks at the beach toward the end are among my favorite expressions throughout the film. Not only are they quirky and revealing of plot and emotion, they are shockingly real in this odd world Buñuel and Dalí have created. Brava! This was an amazing way to kick off my descent into intentional media intake and abnormal depictions of reality.
